Starry Night

.Starry NightVincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night painted with buttercream icing. This cake was for a birthday celebration of a former art history professor at McGill University. When he opened the box, apparently he said, “She nailed it!” My art history teacher would be so proud.

  1. My soon-to-be 14 yr old daughter is a huge Van Gogh fan, and this is her favorite painting. I would love to make this for her. Would you possibly be able to explain how you created the texture in the icing? Or, a general “how to?” Thank you!

    1. Sure thing. I lightly iced a 9″x13″ cake with white icing. I had printed out Starry Night about that size. I cut some of the major pieces (trees, building, etc) and traced them with a toothpick for position to get all the proportions right. Then I made many different colours. (You’ll need quite a few icing bags with largish round tips.) And then I just started piping. It’s fun because it’s like you’re painting so you don’t have to be afraid of piping perfect icing. Make sure you have another print out for reference so you can follow what it’s supposed to look like. I photographed most of my step-by-step on my personal blog. Best of luck, lemme know how it goes!
